Mary Thomas Geography and Women's Studies

Mary E. Thomas (Ph.D. University of Minnesota, 2002) is Assistant Professor of Geography and of Women’s Studies. Her research primarily focuses on the processes of racial and gender identification of teenage girls in the United States. She explores how subjects learn about and reproduce social differences like gender, race, sexuality, and class, through spatial practice. She is currently writing a book about her research with Latina and Armenian girls at a Los Angeles high school. The book project examines girls' practices of racial-ethnic segregation, and their responses to boys' racial violence at school.
