SOCIOLOGY 464 - Sociology of Work
Randy Hodson
Overview of Course:
Work occupies our best waking hours and the nature of our work is the most
significant determinant of the quality of our daily lives. This class
will help students understand the varieties of work and its future role in
their lives. After taking this course, students will be able to give
informed answers to such questions as: "Why are there no easy jobs?"
"Why do we have increasing problems of low-wage work, poverty and homelessness
in a wealthy society?" "Can the U.S. really survive as a service economy?"
"In what ways are women gaining equality at the workplace?" "What are
my chances of getting injured or sick on the job?" "What does the changing
world economy mean for MY future?" “How can I ever hope to balance
my career and family responsibilities?” and, most importantly, "What can
I do to make the world of work a better place for myself and others?"
