The Ohio State University : Sociology : Computing : Web page help

  1. Read the OSU Web Policy and Guidelines, which applies to all pages hosted on our web server.
    - This includes restrictions on the distribution of copyrighted material, which are complicated. Not all restrictions are waived by Fair Use or by the TEACH Act, so be very careful about making downloaded articles or other material available through your web page.
  2. Read the OSU Minimum Web Accessibility Standards, which all department web pages must meet.
  3. Contact the SRL staff and request space on the Sociology Web Server. Specify whether you want to create a course web page or a personal web page.
  4. The SRL will reply once your Web folder is ready. You can then start placing documents in the folder, which will immediately be accessible over the web. This means that they will also be accessible to anyone who has web access, so only put files there that you don't mind the world seeing.
  5. Your homepage must be named index.htm, index.html, or index.php for your web pages to be linked on Sociology personnel and course indices.
  6. NOTE:The SRL will not design or maintain your page; you are entirely responsible for creating and maintaining personal and course web pages.
Course Web Pages

When requesting space for a course page, include the course number and, if you are not the instructor for the course, the instructor's last name.

The SRL makes a special template available for course pages that only requires text-editing skills. No HTML coding is required. Please contact the SRL if you are interested in this option.

If you are interested in features beyond a simple presentation of the course summary, your contact information and links to handouts, the SRL recommends that you pursue development of a WebCT or Desire2Learn page, supported by TELR.

Your course page folder will be located at i:\classes\soc###\instructor, where soc### is the course number (e.g. soc101) and instructor is the instructor's last name.
The page can be accessed at http://sociology.osu.edu/classes/soc###/instructor.

To maintain the coherece of the web site, we recommend that you only store department course pages under the '\classes\' folder, and not under your personal web folder.

If you wish to reuse a course page during a given quarter, please contact the SRL before the beginning of that quarter so that we can create a link to your page from the quarterly course web page listing.

Personal Web Pages

Your course page folder will be located at i:\people\ini, where ini is your sociology username.
Your page can be accessed at http://sociology.osu.edu/ini.

Access the document from a web browser using the URL "http://sociology.osu.edu/ini/" where ini is replaced with your initials.

Maintaining Your Page

Maintenance of your page can be handled by placing, editing and deleting files in your web page folder.

You can create subfolders to organize your files. You just have to specify the subfolder in your URL, so that a document called 'handout1.htm' in a folder called 'handouts' in your course page folder would be linked as follows:

http://sociology.osu.edu/classes/soc###/lastname/handouts/handout.1.htm

If you want to work on your page but are not logged on to a department computer, you can access files on i: through the Sociology WebVPN interface.
