How to Apply
This page contains specific instructions on applying to the graduate program in the Department of Sociology at The Ohio State University. Please see the Ph.D. Requirements page for general admissions policies.
Students must apply separately for admission both to the Department of Sociology and to the Graduate School at Ohio State, which administers all graduate programs.
Deadlines for Graduate Admissions
We only admit for Autumn Quarter and the deadlines are (this applies to both departmental funding and to the University Fellowship):
- International Applicants: November 24th
- Domestic Applicants: December 15th
Sociology Department Application
Applicants must submit the following for admission to the Graduate Program in Sociology at The Ohio State University:
- A completed departmental application (complete and print).
- One set of official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions.
- A photocopy of the official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores from the verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing tests. Official scores must be reported to The Ohio State University by ETS (OSU Institutional Code: 1592, Sociology Department Code: 2102).
- Three (3) letters of recommendation from people who have direct knowledge of your academic performance and potential for graduate study.
- A statement of purpose, which should outline the applicant's relevant training, research experience, academic goals, plan of study, career objectives, and reasons for choosing sociology at Ohio State. Any special circumstances that need explaining should be noted as well.
- A copy of your resume or Curriculum Vita.
- A short (10 - 12 page) sample of your academic writing that clearly demonstrates the applicant's critical thinking skills, quality of writing and potential for academic success. Those applying for admission to the Ph.D. program should provide a copy of their M.A. thesis, a draft of the thesis, or M.A. prospectus.
- International students whose native language is NOT English must submit a photocopy of the official report of the TOEFL scores. Official scores must be reported to The Ohio State University by ETS (OSU Institutional Code: 1592, Sociology Department Code: 2102).
- International students applying for a Teaching Associate position must submit a photocopy of the official report of the Test of Spoken English (TSE) scores.

Graduate School Application
Applicants must submit the following for admission to the Graduate School of The Ohio State University:
- On-line application and accompanying nonrefundable application fee.
- Three (3) Reference Forms
- One set of official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions.
- Supplemental Domestic Application materials.
- Supplemental International Application materials.
