Hello. I am an ABD doctoral student and GA in the Department of
Sociology at The Ohio State University. I was born and raised in
Long Beach, California,
which is located along the southern coast of Los Angeles County.
I earned my Associate's Degree (liberal studies) at Long
Beach City College, my Bachelor's Degree (sociology with an emphasis
in small groups & social interaction) at California State
University, Long Beach, and my Master's Degree (sociology - crime
& community) from Ohio State. Prior to becoming a
graduate student, I worked in the offset printing industry, did bouncer
& security work, and was employed by the City Attorney's Office for
the City of Huntington Beach, California.
Most of my interests in sociology tend to fall within the boundaries of
penology, criminology, gender, and deviance. Some of the
substantive topics that I like to study include violence, policing, and
emotions. The experiences I had while growing up in Southern
California shaped my research interests considerably and provided me
with insights into many sociological issues, including deviance and
violent behavior.
I have taught the Sociology of Gangs
(SOC 294), Social Problems (Soc
202), Men in Society (SOC 635), Penology
(SOC 611), the Sociology of Deviant Behavior (SOC 610), the
Sociological Aspects of Deviance (SOC 210) and Introductory Sociology
(SOC 101) as an
independent instructor at Ohio State. I worked as an
undergraduate advisor
in the OSU Sociology/Criminology Advising Office before I became an
independent
instructor, and I have served as a TA for various classes (SOC 101, SOC
410, SOC 609) and worked as a research associate in the Ohio State
University Center for Survey Research. I originally developed
this webpage
in the winter quarter of 2000 to provide a collection of resources for
my Sociology 101 students.
In the past two years I have been working on an original data
collection project with Professor Paul Bellair. I will be
continuing with this research and working at another institution as a
visiting professor during the 2006-2007 academic year.
