Undergraduate Research

Do Something Great! -- Conduct your own original research at one of the nation’s Top 10 Research Institutions! (Based on rankings just posted by the National Science Foundation, Division of Science Resources Statistics, August, 2005.) Research in Sociology means affecting change in the world around you!

Our faculty engage in a wide-range of Sociological and inter-disciplinary research. Complex issues currently being tackled include:

  • Why are crimes committed in one community and not another?
  • What are the social impacts of child abuse?
  • How does the wantedness of pregnancy affect child development?
  • What are current adolescent sexual and contraceptive behaviors?
  • How does the building of a new sports complex affect a community?
  • How does religion influence the behaviors and attitudes of America’s youth?
  • Has public support for capital punishment fluctuated in relation to the number of executions per year?
  • What are the causes and consequences of divorce?
  • What is the significance of fatherhood in the lives of men?
  • How does the race of a victim or a violator of a crime affect how the crime is portrayed in media?
  • How wide-spread are public-order disturbances on college campuses?

What will you learn about society as a product of your research?
