Senior Thesis
Sociology and Criminology are research-based disciplines. Therefore, engaging in research while an undergraduate in our department is a way to contribute to your chosen discipline. We encourage you to participate in research as a way to better understand how we generate knowledge and to acquire research skills.
Who Should Write a Senior Thesis?
- Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.3 and higher.
- Students who are interested in continuing their education in graduate school.
- Students who are interested in conducting research.
- Students who have or are hoping to establish a relationship with a faculty member.
- Students with a strong interest in writing.
- Students who need elective hours during their senior year.
What Should I Expect?
- To conduct in-depth research on a social issue of personal interest.
- To invest time researching and writing during your final three quarters at Ohio State.
- To earn up to 10 credit hours of H783 (does not require honors designation to enroll).
- To present your research to your faculty committee at an oral examination.
- To Graduate with Distinction upon a successful oral examination.
- To commit the same amount of time per quarter as you would for a 600 level course.
- To be challenged and to develop your writing and analytical thinking skills.
- To meet regularly with your faculty advisor.
